First Friday - Ed Funk

Ed Funk provides his own narrative in the above video. I felt lucky in having stumbled into the previously empty gallery space in the Murphy Art Center and getting a chance to chat with him. Funk is the owner of Dolphin Papers and the G.C. Murphy Building and a painter and printmaker. As a business owner he has been a quiet and unassuming influence in the resurgence of Fountain Square. As an artist Funk reminds us that being an artist should be about fun and being true to ourselves.

Ahem, Ed Funk, a head's up maybe? Since when does an artist's show need to be "outed" like this? I can't wait to see it. Is this the Woodburn and Westcott gallery space, restored back to its pre-shelfy and glorious self?

he makes stuff because he has to, not because he wants to.

"Fountain Square Resurence"? Last time I looked that area had more business closings than openings and the Murph still sits about a third empty with occasional shows in the old Woodburn & Westcott space and occasionally the old Eyeblink Gallery space. The city never came through with it's promised "revitalization plan" to redo the sidewalks and plant trees and the crowds have changed from actual art buyers to 20-somethings looking for free entertainment. Let's not try to pull the wool over our own eyes, OK?
