Cindy Hinant at Unusual Animals Project Space

Kicking off the newly-dedicated Unusual Animals Project Space at the Harrison Center for the Arts will be artist Cindy Hinant’s installation ‘Cascades’. The debut of the new gallery and installation will occur this Wednesday, October 31st at 7pm. The Unusual Animals Project Space will be curated by Michael Kaufmann with assistant curator Cindy Hinant. The space will feature installations by local, regional and national artists, changing four times during the year.

Cascades represents a personal mythology with nature. Hinant describes the work as “an environment that combines images from popular culture with childish shapes to describe the relationship I have with the natural world.”

Curator Michael Kaufmann has this to say...
“Whimsical post-minimalism by Herron Grad student Cindy Hinant, brings some ‘heart’ and ‘warm fuzzyness’ to a literal post-minimalist landscape. However, the viewer doesn't get off so easy and leave feeling cuddly. Tension is held in true monochromatic fashion leaving the viewer to either long for color, or able to fill it in themselves. It is this which removes Hinant's work from the danger of being cute, but transcends it into a kind of waking dream that references a rich history of landscape rendering -- both geographical and philosophical.”

Like most Unusual Animals events, this one will be alive with music and performance, featuring Raymond Raposa of Castanets, with Cryptacize, Deer Tick, and Bronze Float. Music will be performed in the Harrison Center Underground. Tickets are $6, doors at 7pm and music at 8pm.

Cascades is on view through November. The Unusual Animals Project Space at the Harrison Center for the Arts is located at 1505 North Delaware Street in Indianapolis.
