2007-2008 Stutz Artist Residency Program

Congratulations to Jay Parnell and Ginny Taylor Rosner on being selected as the recipients for this years Stutz free studio space/residency. We all know how important a studio can be to our practice and certainly how expensive a good studio is. I expect this opportunity will benifit them both. Below is from the press release:

Local artists Jay Parnell and Ginny Taylor Rosner have been selected as the 2007-2008 Stutz Residents, which entitles them to free studio space and utilities in the Stutz Building for one year. Valued at $6,000 per artist, the residency is one of the largest grants to an individual artist in the state.

Parnell is a figurative oil painter. He also was recently named a 2007 Creative Renewal Fellow by the Arts Council of Indianapolis. A self-taught artist, his work has been exhibited at Indiana Black Expo, J. Martin Gallery, Hot House Art Gallery, Dean Johnson Gallery, Eli Lilly and Company, the Indiana Governor’s Residence, the Society of Illustrators Gallery in New York and the University of Indianapolis, where he has been an adjunct professor. His current body of work focuses on familial relationships and stories. He is a 1992 graduate of Ball State University.

Rosner is a photographer and printmaker of interior spaces. A Chicago native, she earned a BFA in photography and general fine arts from Herron School of Art and Design in 1991. She is an adjunct professor in photography at Herron and the University of Indianapolis, and she teaches photography and hand bookbinding classes at the Indianapolis Art Center. Her work includes alternative processes, historic photographic processes and printmaking to create original works of art about abandoned structures and new subjects, such as landscapes

Thirty-nine artists applied for the residency.

“It was a very difficult decision as all the applicants were of such high caliber,” said Caroline Mecklin, Stutz Artists Association Studio Residency chair. “There’s a lot of positive energy with the Stutz Artists Association right now, and each of the applicants cited their desire for a supportive community of artists as one of their main reasons for wanting to have a studio in the Stutz.”

Funding for the program comes from proceeds from the association’s annual open house. The 2008 Stutz Studio Open House is April 25 and 26. In addition to the open house, the association hosts monthly daytime First Friday events and a holiday show on Nov. 16.

Since its inaugural year in 1996, the residency program has provided in-kind contributions of more than $72,000 13 local artists. Previous residents are David Kleeman, Kate Oberreich, Kevin Smola, Ismaila “Izo” Nidaye, Stephanie Robertson, Larry Endicott, Kyle Ragsdale, Jan Zoya, Susan Watt Grade, Emily Kennerk and Greg Hull.

The Stutz Artists Association is the largest association of working artists in Indiana. It exists to encourage its member artists and to promote their work.

The historic Stutz Business Center is located at 1060 North Capitol Avenue on an entire city block in downtown Indianapolis. The 400,000-square-foot former car factory was renovated in the early 1990s and its studios and office space are now home to more 80 artists, sculptors, photographers, designers, architects and craftsmen.
