Efroymson Family Funding

A few days ago the New York Times posted this news bit about the generous $2.5 million dollar endowment grant given by the Eforymson family to the Indianapolis Museum of Art for the commission of new site specific art works on a 6 month rotation.

A GRANT IN INDIANAPOLIS
-by Carol Vogel

Like many encyclopedic museums today, the Indianapolis Museum of Art wants to enhance its contemporary-art collections and programs. Now it has received some help: a $2.5 million endowment grant toward the commissioning of site-specific installations for its new entry pavilion. The pavilion is named for a local family, the Efroymsons, and the grant comes from the Efroymson Fund.

Maxwell L. Anderson, the museum’s director, said the project “adds vitality to the programming and connects the art of our time with the art of all time.”

Every six months a different artist is to create a work for the pavilion. The first piece, to be installed this spring, will be by the New York sculptor Tony Feher.

Also of note, the Central Indiana Community Foundation has just announced the third round of the Efroymson Fellowship grants. I have always considered this one of the best opportunities for artists in Indiana and in time could prove most important to raising awareness to Indiana artists and strengthen the level of competition amongst our artists. CICF will also be taking advantage of Slideroom.com's submission process, which you may have read about awhile back in one of my earlier posts. The below information is taken straight from CICF's email announcement.

I love Tony Feher. Have you heard anything else about the nature of the installation?

Jeff,

At this time I have no details on the Tony Feher installation other than what the NYT's article stated but once we hear more we will let you all know.

Anonymous,

Previous winners of the Efroymson Fellowship Grant have been, in 2004, artists Gregory Hull, Linda Adele Goodine, Eric Nordgulen, Marc Jacobson, and David Russick. 2005 Fellows include Katrin Asbury, Stuart Hyatt, Emily W. Kennerk, Brian Myers, and Jamie Pawlus. To see some of their work you should stop by IMOCA to see a group show of the previous round winners. Over all a good show. There was no grant given in 2006.

Interestingly, CICF had SlideRoom alter its system so reviewers cannot see the names of applicants. Everybody's name will be replaced with number to ensure fairness in the selection process. I have been really impressed with the integrity of this whole organization.
