The Rules for Artists
Do you like this story?
One of the great things about checking so many and varied blogs on a daily basis is that you often come across such interesting images or writings you may have not been able to find otherwise. While reading a post by Triple Diesel (a regular contributor to PainterNYC), I came across this link, The Rules for Artists by Irit Krygier. I found it worth reading and thought the artists who might be reading here may find it interesting. enjoy.

This is interesting.
A curator laying the ground rules on what artist should be like:
-Don't whine around me
-Don't ever be negative or criticize shows I put together
-Don't take up more than 10 minutes of my time
-Be a genius
-Be pleasent
-Oh, take your creer on your own hands, even though it depends on me to give you a show and make you a name.
-Don't complain about dealers with me, you are on the weak side of the rope and it will always break on your side.
-Pretend that you are busy so it will amuse me to see you are wanted by others and it will endorse my decision to place you in a show or give you a show. (feels like my last job when I had to pretend I was busy when my boss arrived)
-If you're not invited to group shows curate your own and invite me, I will likely not go, but I like receiving invitations: makes me feel wanted.
-Do all of the above and you will be measured by the strength of your work.
It's a funny business, but we made it that way, we gave them all access to our souls, all the power they hold.

Ha ha! I agree with above. But I also agree with the rules. Or rather, I think the rules describe accurately how it works.

Very well put. I'm not sure how else it could possibly be though. Therefore, as an artist, I think it is best to convince oneself to like it this way, because that's the way it is. This side-steps a lot of grief.
