Art Basel Miami
Do you like this story?
We're only a week away, but for those who may be sickened or turned off by commercialism and the art market in general, make sure to read MAN's take on putting this all into perspective (he starts by comparing ABMB to the Parisian Salons and promises more on this topic in the week to come - stay tuned).

Uh, how many people in Indianapolis are actually concerned with Art Basel Miami? Thanks for trying to bring pull us up, but come on...

About a third of my artist friends are planning on going, and I have wanted to go for the past three years but could never afford the trip. I believe that most artists interested in the contemporary art world have at least a passing interest in ABMB even if they detest the idea of art fairs. Indianapolis or not, it has a major impact on the "Art World".

Har har har. Most people go because they want to be part of the scene. It's exciting. Only a small group of people are actually affected by what goes on there. I'm just tickled by the pretensions.

I'm still sometimes amazed at people's short-sighted view of this city and the contemporary art world.
- "Only a small group of people are actually affected by what goes on there." This year there are approximately 600 galleries showing throughout Miami. I can't guess as to how many thousands of artists that translates too. Not too mention every museum puts on their best show.
- "I'm just tickled by the pretensions." Well I'm just tickled by the insecurities...
- "how many people in Indianapolis are actually concerned with Art Basel Miami?" If you're not, you should be. This is the best opportunity in this country for artists to explore galleries and collectors to look at new art. And if you have ambitions of opening a gallery, you need to learn how the world works.

Hmmm...by "the world" I assume you mean the world you aspire to be a player in?
Don't get mad, I just think it's amazing that in order to make, choose, and buy art people need to know that what they are buying and producing is fashionable and acceptable to, yes, a pretty small number of people. I understand how it works, I'm just highly critical of it.

It's BAFFLING that not everyone buys into the vast systems of art fairs? I don't think it's quite so baffling.
