FILM & ARTIST TALK: Jason Salavon and The Way Things Go (Der Laufe Der Dinge) by Fischli and Weiss.
Thursday, April 20, 2006, 7:00 pm Stout Library at the IMA

Chicago-based artist Jason Salavon is a nationally known leader in the emerging genre of computer- based art. He uses software to reconfigure data, offering new perspectives on the familiar. In a recent work, Salavon used software to automatically generate cave paintings, prompting questions about the random and the purposeful, the abstract and the recognizable.

Hear a short talk by Salavon, followed by the film he selected: The Way Things Go (Der Laufe Der Dinge) by Fischli and Weiss. Essentially a kinetic sculpture, this short film documents the self-destruction of 100 feet of physical interactions. Fischli and Weiss use everyday items and restructure their relationships to one another, asking the viewer to consider these objects in a new light. The New York Times Wrote, “Their masterpiece to date, using elemental means—fire and fireworks, blasts of air, gravity, and a variety of corrosive liquids—the artists manage to sustain a chain reaction of evermore absurd materials and events for 30 minutes.” Film with Artist Talk is presented in collaboration with the Herron School of Art and Design.

I've seen bits and pieces of this film but never the entire 30 minutes. From what I've seen, I highly recommend people mark their calendars now.

I saw this film, The Way Things Go (Der Laufe Der Dinge) by Fischli and Weiss, in it's entirety about two years ago. I was quite entertained and amazed by this piece. I look forward to getting the chance to see it again. It is also nice to see that Salavon is getting another nod here in Indianapolis so soon. I first heard of Jason and his work from a discussion with Emily Kennerk and have seen his work a lot since then. I look forward to hearing him talk.

Jason also has one of my favorite pieces up in the Chase Collection show at the Arts Center through April 16th. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

I own "The Way Things Go" (Der Laufe Der Dinge)... I purchased it at CAC in Cincinnati as part of the rotating exhibit Gadget: Mechanics and Motion In Contemporary Art.
