Before you head to Chicago this weekend...

... you might want to make sure there's an art fair going on. The Chicago Tribune reports today that art work is arriving from all over the country to a tent with no walls and a dirt floor. I think it's time Thomas Blackman (the producer of the fair) really tries to reinvent this fair. Art Chicago has been a joke the past couple of years and I just read that the San Francisco Fair which he also produced has been cancelled as well.

The whole situation is pretty ridiculous. Many people, both galleries and artists, have invested a lot of money (some even coming from overseas) for what is shaping up to be nothing. I still haven't heard a definite, but the rumor that the fair wont happen has been circulating around Chicago and the AIC for a few days now.

How many fairs do these people have to cancel before people are no longer going to bother with them? The cancelled SFIA in January, Art New York in February and now it looks like Art Chicago too. Thats 3 in under 5 months. It's Practically obscene.

The last thing the world needs is another art fair, especially in New York two weeks before Armory and its satellites. I've never been to the Chicago fair before, but I was in town last week. If you're there, be sure to see the James Hotel show and the installations at the new (to-be finished) Hyde Park Art Center. Lots of great shows of local artists around town.
