Poll: Art and Nature Park

Well, with the grand opening of the IMA's new Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park last weekend, we here at OtC were curious, what was your favorite work installed in the park? Please vote using our poll in the right hand sidebar. While we are certainly curious to know what the local arts fans think of the park, we expect the true test of its success may be in whether the general public adopts the park and uses it frequently. I expect once they get to know of it and see it first hand, they just may be swayed to become more involved and interested in the art our city has to offer. If you would like to comment further on your thoughts regarding the Art and Nature Park or any of the individual pieces, by all means do so in this posts comment section. The more discussion of these works the better.

For those of you who feel you need a reminder of the works or were unsure of the name of the work or the artist, I would like to persuade you to take a look at the IMA's nicely designed 100 Acres Publication here. There you shall be able to get any and all information you may need to help you with your decision.

For those of you who have not yet made it out there, I will forgive you on the condition that it had to do with all the rain we have been getting the past week but the next nice day you get, I highly recommend you to go and visit. The grounds are beautiful and the works are amazing. I know picking my personal favorite was quite difficult as there were so many factors to take into consideration. But trust me, I won't hold you to your initial decision. Congratulations to everyone who had a hand in the Art and Nature Park. Job well done. Your hard work has paid off and I believe will have a great impact on the local community. I for one will look forward to its continued evolution in the coming years.

Went last evening...delighted to see so many people out enjoying the park. Enjoyed the art...hated the trash that seemed to be everywhere with few discernable receptacles...(also, wondering if peeing in the woods is supposed to be part of the experience?).

Seriously, where are the trash cans?

Some nice pieces, though I'm feeling like Zittel isn't getting appropriate credit for her pieces. The media seems to be implying that the current residents, two Herron students, are the artists. Zittel designed a piece to be activated by its inhabitants, but the inhabitants are just that. They're not the artists, NUVO. The artist is always the originator of the idea, not necessarily the one who builds it, carries it out, or activates it.

Stanley,

During the opening event, I had a conversation with another artist and we were both in the mindset that the success of the park was not going to be decided by the museum or even the local art community but by the general public. If the public would adopt the park as a destination upon which to visit, bring your family and explore. The art would be the component that activates the space and brings people into interaction with the art outside the usual expected environment. From what I have been seeing and hearing, it sounds to me that it is truly a success. As for peeing in the woods, you got a do what you got to do. But, there are restrooms in the visitors pavilion though I do think this is not very well marked for the general public, especially with it being so far from the main entrance into the park.

Artist designed trash recepticals? I think that may be a nice addition next.

I love the Zittel piece. I hope our latest post, which focuses on the Herron students staying on the island, is at least clear that the island is in fact a piece in itself designed by Andrea Zittel. Local press love a local tie-in story. Seems if its not tied-in to something local they will just not cover it. That is more than likely why the focus seems to be on the two students.
