You decide

Stroke of nostalgic genius or missed opportunity?

Hahaha, very funny comparison! I just moments ago posted on an architecture website that I find the Herzog and de Meuron stadium to be impressive, but not beautiful. The Naptown stadium would thus be, um, pretty?, but not impressive!

The HdM is, to my eye, too chunky, too excessive. It is, however, risky, bold, and interesting, not to mention damn cool. Lucas is, unfortunately, also excessive and chunky, but not the least bit cool.

Lucas Oil Stadium has to please a local market. (function then form)

The HdM has to please the world! (form then function)

Living and working here so many years.
I've witness so many missed opportunitys. Not because of money but lack of vision.

The front of Lucas Oil Stadium looks too much like the front of a huge grocery store.

What a controversy the Graves designed Thomson headquarters was in Carmel. Designers work ahead of any audience if for no other reason than they're more aware of the cutting edges in their diciplines. The public then catches up and kudos are bestowed on the visionaries. There is little vision in Indianapolis. The skyline here is dowdy by comparison to almost any city of this size. We are much too conservative. What a shame that this is reflected also in the local art audience.

Your comparison should include the new main library addition as well. I would pick Seattle's library over ours in a second. Vancouver's even.

This comes under the heading of "Indigenous Architecture". It follows many of it's local predicessors in style and fits right in nicely. It could have been built in the 30s, the 50s or the 80s. See, it's timeless! LOL.

Conseco Fieldhouse was a vision. Lucas oil is like creating a larger version of the same success. This doesn't work. They should have come up with a bolder scheme. One more like these two and Indianapolis will have Russian nesting doll stadiums.

The biggest travesty about our new stadium is the name. egads... Wasn't the name Verizon Wireless Music Center bad enough for Indiana? Now we have Lucas Oil Stadium. If swear that if I'm ever rich, I'm going to buy the naming rights to some big public arena and call it The Lamisil Antifungus Jock Itch Dome.
