When it comes to art exhibitions, I prefer...

Great shows can be dependant on many things but I was wondering, and maybe some of you have questioned this as well, what kind of shows do people want to see more of? The obvious answer, great shows. But for me, while I tend to prefer solo shows the most, as it gives me a better understanding of an artists vision and their work, I tend to enjoy highly focused and conceptually thought out group shows the most as long as the curator is not taking liberties with the actual intent of the artists works. How about you?

Most conceptual shows that I have experienced as a collector in the local area leave me disinterested. Almost all are not highly focused and conceptually thought out, but in fact have cheesy themes, that require artists to produce art within a 2 week window. Not what I would call allowing an artist to follow their voice. Best example would be the White Castle show at The Harrison.

as much as i love being bathed in one artists works, i find my mind working a little better when moving from theme to theme at a 2-3 person show. conceptual shows allow for riffing on an idea, but at the same time you witness a thought process that can be outright embarrassing (a few strong pieces and a bunch of crap)...the same can be said at salon style shows, but i havent seen a strong one of those for about ten years now.

I prefer looking at 2-3 person shows also. It gives just enough variety and is interesting to compare the artists. I like reading the story of why the artists are showing together also.
I actually enjoy participating in the "theme" shows's kind of fun...satisfies my inner dork.
