Weekend Preview

The IMA and iMOCA are both kicking off events this week that should be worth checking out. At the IMA, we shall see local artist Emily Kennerk's first solo show in a museum. All I can tell you about it at this time is that it is big, minimal, and will make you look at things a bit differently. I will be conducting an interview/conversation with her later tonight and hope to have it posted by Friday. For those of you interested in more information on her thoughts and ideas, should be sure to go to her talk tomorrow. Also, don't miss the Sam Easterson videos before they leave.

iMOCA will be reopening this week with a video show after being closed for some renovations and fund raising. From what I have read, the work being shown by Robert Boyd should be quite interesting. I have been looking forward to it for a couple months now. Also of note, Form + Function will unveil a gift shop with exciting new items at iMOCA. Under the direction of Form + Function, the gift shop at iMOCA, will feature cool, attractive and functional housewares, gifts and lighting. Form + Function specializes in modern classics in contemporary European furniture and lighting. The proceeds will benefit the museum.

Emily Kennerk: SuburbanNation,

This first solo exhibition from Indianapolis-based artist Kennerk will include a series of four installations influenced by the American suburban landscape: High Density, Untitled: Porches, and Welcome Home will be installed in the Forefront galleries. These works will use mass-produced materials such as vinyl siding, decking, and other home building materials in order to formalize the prefabricated dwellings that blanket the American horizon. Extracting these forms from their primary setting, reinterpreting them, and reintroducing them in a museum context will allow for a fresh examination of the public's relationship to these suburban icons. The fourth installation, Boundaries, will be created on the museum's front lawn. An evocative earth work, the project will use traditional lawn striping techniques to reiterate the patterns of subdivision plots.

A reception for Boyd will occur during the grand re-opening celebration at iMOCA. The reception will also feature music by some of the city’s favorite DJs, food from the Jazz Kitchen, specialty drinks by Stellar Gin and other surprises.

This event is FREE for members and just $5 for non-members.

XANADU: Armageddon is set to a disco beat in Robert Boyd's four-part video installation Xanadu, which kicks off the grand re-opening of iMOCA. Boyd, a New York-based artist, used rapid editing to combine images from vintage documentary films, TV and Internet clips, and cartoons into a history of apocalyptic thought--presented as a series of MTV-style music videos in a disco-like setting.
