What's to become of the Regions Tower?
Do you like this story?
I am sure everyone who was in Indianapolis last April remembers the tornado-strength winds that ripped through downtown and tore off parts of the north, west and south facades of the Regions Tower. The tower has since been repopulated, yet ugly metal reminders of the storm still cover up the parts of the building that were left exposed.
It seems this bandage has become such a part of our day to day lives that no one even notices anymore. Well apparently someone is trying to make sure we don't forget. I recently spotted the sticker above on the USA Today kiosk on Mass Ave outside of Starbucks. I am guessing they may populate many other makeshift billboards throughout downtown. I heard even before the storm that there was a group trying to push for historic renovation of the structure. I have found very little information on the building itself, but from what I understand the areas of the facade that aren't covered in windows were once covered in marble trying to shine in all it's modernest glory.
I have also heard that Michael Maurer, co-owner of the building, wants to leave the tower as his legacy to the city. Calls to Todd Maurer, Micheal's son and president of Halakar Properties (the leasing agent for the building) were not returned.
As this city continually announces advancement on ho-hum projects, the Maurer's do indeed have an opportunity to do something special. My only question is why the secrecy? Who is the architect? Is there a competition? For years this tower was the dominant feature on our humble landscape. Let's hope it will once again return as one.
UPDATE: I just received a call from Todd Maurer. It appears an "internationally recognized" architect has been chosen and the design is being finalized. Formal announcement will come this summer. Stay tuned...

It will be interesting to see what comes of it.
I know that they have some storefront samples on top of the lower roof.
