Expanding the Scene - Focus Seattle

In our never-ending quest to encourage people to think outside of the box (forgive the cliche), direct your attention to to this article in the Seattle Post [via]. With events such as these and the increased visibility of Seattle galleries on the national art fair circuit, it's clear that contemporary art is thriving there. So much so (the article above points out), curators are far outnumbering the number of traditional curatorial jobs.

So did the curators move to New York? Nope. They stayed and found innovative ways to present what they believed in. From opening art bars to simply renting a U-haul, they're doing it and most importantly, the press is covering it.

Case in point: Vital 5 Productions

On one of my visits to Seattle a few years ago I found Peter Miller Books a store that also exhibits artwork regularly. It was a pretty neat experience. I also visited Ogle in Portland OR, a gallery and eye doctor place.

The quality of the presentation and substance of work makes it worth the trip.

So check them out. At last contact Peter Miller no longer exhibits art work. But the bookstore is a nice stop on your Seattle tour.

The latest thing I hear coming out of Indianapolis is the Julian Opie public art exhibition. Then again he is not an Indianapolis-based artist. So news of his work goes far and wide.

Is OnTheCusp going to have artists reviews, interviews, or more local artwork displayed for those outside of Indianapolis to get a better feel for the arts community there? Or perhaps post a list of artists websites. That would greatly help.

Thanks for writing and the tips on other places to check out in Seattle.

It's nice this city has put on exhibitions like Julian Opie that draw more attention to our city, and in response we will continue to and work on expanding our coverage of the local arts scene, both pictorally and in review.

We are currently exploring options for website redesign and making this platform a little more user friendly. Thanks for reading and keep checking back for updates.
