Keeping up on New York

I know this post again has nothing to do with Indianapolis but I am sure that there are many other Indianapolis area artists that like to keep up with the gallery scene in the New York City area. Well over the last few months my favorite way of doing this aside from reading some of the area blogs was to check out ArtCal. ArtCal is just a wonderful gallery guide that makes keeping up with all those galleries a lot more easier than ever before. The thing I most like about the site is the fact that for each gallery show listed they have a picture of one of the works. When in a hurry, I can scroll down the images and see if any of the pictures just jump out at me. If so, click, click, and I can have all the information I need about that show. ArtCal also gives you their picks for the shows you should go out and see. Very much worth looking into if you are planning a trip to NYC or just want to see what is showing out that way. And for those that want to make it even easier, they now have wonderful email version that keeps you up to date every week.

Once you've figured out where you want to go and planning your walk through Chelsea, spend a little time on http://chelseaartgalleries.com/ - they will generate a map and give you a summary of all the places on your list.

I agree Chris, great addition. I too have found that site very informative. But the more you know about the galleries, the better you can use that site.

Scott, you are doing a fine job keeping us up to speed on important stuff going on. Thanks. I would like to bring up a question I have that is not related to anything I have seen on this blog. By the way, just for the record, I did not submit a proposal for the Mass.Ave public art project. Does anyone know why the Arts Council keeps the names of thier jurors a secret? For example, in the recent calls for artists (Mass. Ave. public art projects) and the call for writers ( Shared Voices/Shared Spaces project) no identification of those who are jurying is made. It would be meaningful to those who are submitting to have the names of jurors indicated. Most juried competitions do that..IDADA's annual juried members show is only one example. If a sponsor is worried about partiality, then a remedy is to remove the names of submitting artists/writers from materials given to the juror/jurors. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

That's a great question and I'm not sure of an answer. (perhaps the jury is not yet finalized?) Anyway, I have heard jurors names in past projects, I would probably suggest calling the Arts Council and my guess is they'll be open and honest about it.
