Grad School

Columbia is apparently not including first year grad students in their open-studios event held each December. I believe this is a fantastic idea and hopefully others will follow. Hop on over to Brian Sholis for a summary and his 2004 take on this subject in Artforum.com.

I'm not sure why everyone is so obsessed with Columbia/Yale/Hunter open studio events. It's crazy that these kids should be picked up before they've had a chance to figure out anything real- like how to live outside of school. Are collectors really that fascinated by how college kids view the world? I don't care that they've decided not to show first year kids. Like they've really matured and developed by their second year of graduate school!

It's a mixed blessing for students that collectors and dealers are so interested in their work. It's a great opportunity, but a lot of pressure too. Collectors want students to have an archetypal style by graduation. How can students take risks and try new things when there's that kind of market pressure? I wonder if Picasso would have been stuck forever in his blue period in today's art market.
