Saturday, March 18th
2 pm - View the movie Alice by Czech animator Jan Svankmajer at the IMA. This movie has been a source of inspiration for artist Amy Cutler, whose work is currently on view.
7 pm - midnight - Gala of Glitter and Glass at the Children's museum. Ticket for a black tie dinner at the Children's Museum to celebrate a new installation by Dale Chihuly - $150. Having the largest Chihuly in the country in our little city - priceless.
Monday, March 20th
7:30 pm - Nich Hornby speaks at Butler (I know, I know - it's not visual but I thought some of you might be interested).
Tuesday, March 21st
7 pm - Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe speaks at Herron.
Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe is the author of several books, including Beyond Piety: Critical Essays on the Visual Arts 1986-1993 and Immanence and Contradiction: Recent Essays on the Artistic Device. He has been awarded National Endowment for the Arts fellowships in painting and criticism as well as a Guggenheim fellowship in painting, and was presented the 1998 Frank Jewett Mather Award for Art Criticism by the College Art Association. He teaches in the graduate program at the Art Center of Design in Pasadena, California. He lives in Culver City, California.

We went to IMA family day Sunday. My strictly "layperson" opinion of the Amy Cutler show was that there was too much of a good thing.
At first I enjoyed looking at the pictures, the one with the boy with the gun nose made me lol. (I have a 10 year old son, if gunboy had had sports balls for hands, that picture would have been 100% accurate! )
I could see where it would be fun to have one or two of these interesting drawings in your collection. But after so many, it got repetitous....for me.
What started out as quirky and interesting somehow became negative and depressing. I didn't finish looking at them all. Too much braids! ;) (ok, I guess I need to work on my attention span)
I really enjoyed the Africa exhibit....but I was very dizzy afterwards. I struggled with my depth perception for at least an hour. Is there some phenomena with small (or low ceilinged) spaces and all that specialized lighting that messes with your mind? Maybe it was my bifocals!? I was afraid of falling afterwards. My daughter didn't seem to be bothered though.
The hands on art for kids part was wonderful, and the museum smelled like fish, in a good way....it made me hungry.
