I want to be, want to be like Ed
Do you like this story?
Sorry if the proximity to the Super Bowl has me over using pop-commercial references, but I wanted to make sure everyone read Edward Winkleman's latest post. If you haven't gotten the hint yet, you need to read his page everyday. Yes, I said everyday. And as you will soon learn, we all need to get our butts more edumacated. I kind of wish I had paid more attention during all of those slide presentations...

Does anyone else find the comparison of contemporary artists to scientists problematic? The major difference I see lies in the fact that the education and basic intelligence necessary to truly understand advances in physics, or even, say, a theory as old as the theory of relativity, will always be beyond the average person. Contemporary art sometimes requires a certain amount of indoctrination, but "The Shock of the New" tells us that general understanding and acceptance of artwork that now seems weird will eventually come. As a society we've accepted and utilized the theory of relativity but few people truly understand it or ever will. I wonder if that is an accepable fate for contemporary art. I wonder if we just cling to the comparison as a way to excuse ourselves for making obtuse work.
But otherwise I don't disagree with the article.

I don't agree with the article much...but I also don't want to argue it either! ;) Everybody has their own opinion on such stuff. I have spent a (half) lifetime looking, comparing, accepting and rejecting things visual....my own eyes have provided me with my education. I am really not interested in being "educated" to other's opinions. The same with music. Don't you think most people are this way? I took art history at IUPUI in the 70's....I enjoyed it. But cotemporary art was just the last page or two. I wish I had gone to art school to learn more techniques, and art business skills, but not to be reducated about what I like. Someone would probably say "ignorance is bliss" at this point, but art is subjective.
