KOSTABI'S WORLD

Reading the many recent comments and questions regarding artists and fame made me think of the artist Mark Kostabi. For the past six years now Mark Kostabi has been writing an occasional "Dear Abby" like column for Artnet.com (a site i highly recommend). I find his column to be very informative, entertaining, and insightful. I thought i would introduce you all to it when, i went to check out Artnet about his column and there it was... His first column of 2006. So, go check it out here. And for previous columns of his go here.

Mark Kostabi had this to say about artists and fame (taken from one of his columns)

How to Become a Rich and Famous Artist

Rule number 1: Make great art.
Rule number 2: Live in New York. (Unless you're ready to wake up to the Internet present and sell your work at low prices but in large quantities through online auctions.)
Rule number 3: Circulate.
Rule number 4: Be professional.
Rule number 5: Have a story (so that you make good copy -- either to art critics or journalists).
Rule number 6: Get other people to work for you. (Not necessarily assistants to crank out the product -- what I mean is get people enthusiastic about you, so they talk you up and write you up.)
Rule number 7: Read all my previous Artnet columns by clicking on "Mark Kostabi" in the featured writers sidebar in Artnet Magazine.
And Rule number 8 (perhaps the most important): Believe that you deserve success.

Smash all your imaginary obstacles. Go forth and conquer!

I feel like a naive home-schooled child who has been sent to Vegas to learn about the world.

Let me add that I do appreciate and follow the links you all are providing. I just found this simile amusing.

But isn't Mark Kostabi extremely creepy? Is he serious? I think he's trying to make the whole world Mark Kostabi consumers, including me, when I read his column.

But doesn't this advice always seem either a)obvious or b)mercenary? I tend to think that if you need his advice, there is something kind of wrong.

I'm more in favor of torching him alive with a mob of indignated artists.
