Weekend Preview

Lots to do and see this Holiday filled First Friday. I will be held up in my studio all night and all are invited to come in and chat, look at a new series of small paintings (all affordably priced for the occassion) and have some cookies. My studio is next door to Big Car Gallery, Studio 214 at the Murphy Arts Center. For those of you, whose shows I may be missing during the night on Friday, I will certainly attempt to check out a number of them in the following days. If you want to get in the mood a bit earlier then check out the first listing in our weekend preview as it is TONIGHT.

"The Suspenders" paintings by Robert Aurel Meko and Deanna Hensley
Opening Reception Friday 12.05.08 7p-midnight
work on display thru December 27th

Herron School of Art and Design painters, Deanna Hensley and Robert Meko, are individually working on a thesis series dealing with suspended, singular objects, ambiguous space, and mass. Though a common thread, the way these issues are approached is what sets them apart.

Meko's paintings are large and figurative wherein the objects, the figures, are suspended by their own volition. Whether they are jumping, falling, or floating is neither clear nor important. The objects in Hensley's paintings appear deliberately hung, be it in reality or just appearance, by string or otherwise to liken them to ornaments. The space in her paintings is undefined, putting an emphasis on the objects themselves. The space is more ambiguous in Meko's paintings. Moving in, out, and over the figure, he interlaces deep and shallow space. The mass in his paintings mostly pertains to size, whereas the mass in Hensley's works concerns quantity.

how odd.

you list the eiteljorg on the righthand column, but you don't put their "holiday show" happening all day on Saturday in your announcements, one of the largest going on in the city. it features over 50 artists on two floors and is free.

Hi Rich, thanks for the notice I had not read that post. Strangely, I am not at all surprised. After all, isn't the Star mostly Associated Press these days?

As for the Eiteljorg, I have them listed as a valuable art institution in our city but in all honesty I do not keep up to date with their activities and exhibitions as perhaps I would like. That said, they have never sent us any sort of press release in the three years we have been writing this blog. While we do not guarantee that everyone who sends us a press release will get listed, if you do not get us the information your chance of getting listed typically rely on my own knowledge of a show.

Funny, as I'm writing this Communication Breakdown by Led Zeppelin just started playing on the internet radio station that I'm listening to. No kidding.

The Eitlejorg has had some incredible shows in the recent past and has been carrying the torch in regard to promoting and exhibiting photography. Maybe a simple call to the PR department could get you on their distribution list. Or better yet just contact James Nottage at jhnottage@eiteljorg.com - I'm sure he would help you out.

Anonymous,

What's the chip on your shoulder about Eitlejorg? They're big boys, they can manage their own advertising if they wish.

The Eitlejorg deserves some coverage.
