Dorothy and Herbert Vogel at the IMA

Make room in your schedule tomorrow evening to catch the documentary film, Herb and Dorothy, followed by a Q & A with the Vogel's. A few months back we announced the IMA had acquired 50 works from the Vogel's personal collection as part of a national gift program. Well these works will now be viewable to all this Friday. If you have not yet checked out the IMA's new theater, the Toby, then perhaps this is the opportunity for you. In the spirit of the holidays and giving, what better way to celebrate than to look into the spirit of the Vogel's and their gift to all of us. Hope to see you there.

OPENING Collected Thoughts:
Works from the Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection
December 12, 2008-April 12, 2009
McCormack Forefront Galleries

Starting in the early 1960s, Herb and Dorothy Vogel--he a postal clerk, she a librarian--quietly amassed a remarkable collection of 4,000 works of modern art in their tiny New York apartment. As part of "The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States" national gift program, the Indianapolis Museum of Art is the first to present 50 works from the Vogels' esteemed collection that have recently joined the Museum's permanent collection. New York collectors Dorothy and Herbert Vogel began to collect contemporary artwork in the early 1960s and amassed a rare and insightful collection of works over a period of more than 40 years. Complementing the IMA’s holdings in hard-edge abstract and minimal works from the 1960s, the gifts from the Vogel Collection include primarily works on paper from the late 1960s to 2000, by artists such as Lynda Benglis, James Bishop, Robert Mangold, Elizabeth Murray, Edda Renouf and Richard Tuttle, among others. The works joining the IMA’s collection demonstrate the Vogels’ knowledge, vision, and commitment to new and challenging artwork.

What a fabulous, well attended evening. This collection, the movie and the Vogels appearance was a watershed moment in the history of the IMA and for art collecting in Indianapolis, IMHO, of course.

Last night was just amazing. Rarely, except in their children, do you get to see the culmination of a humans or in this case a married couples purpose in this world. As the Vogels explained collecting was what they did instead of having a family. It was a touching moment and Indianapolis was so fortunate to share in this. For those that didn't attend, I will explain that Indianapolis is the first place putting the collections gifts all on display and this is the Vogels first and possibly only appearance at what will be 50 openings across the country in the next 5 years as other parts of the collection are shown.
